Transform Your Kitesurfing Sail into a Canopy Jacket

Give your old kitesurf sail a second life.
At Upwind, we transform used kitesurf sails into custom Canopy Jackets — durable, functional, and made to last another 20 years.

Each jacket is handcrafted between Sri Lanka and France, combining circular design, high-performance fabric, and a deep respect for the ocean.
What once rode the wind becomes your next favorite piece.

Start Your Transformation

Why Recycle your Kite?

Most kitesurfing sails are manufactured in Sri Lanka and Vietnam, shipped around the world, only to get back to Sri Lanka to be burried or incinerated.

Through this project, you can close the loop — transforming technical waste into a unique, personalized jacket that carries your story.

By recycling your kite, you:
- Reduce textile waste and carbon footprint
- Extend the life of high-performance materials
- Join a growing movement for circular kitewear innovation

Crafted between Sri Lanka and France

The transformation happens in two places that define Upwind’s DNA:

- Colombo, Sri Lanka — where most kitesurf sails are born and where we upcycle them directly in partnership with local artisans.
- France — where finishing touches, personalization, and design refinement take place.

This balance between heritage and innovation allows us to create jackets that respect both the environment and the people behind the craft.

FAQ.

Eligible Kites

We can transform most kitesurf sails — whether they’re made of Dacron, Ripstop Nylon, or hybrid materials.

If your kite has no major tears or mold, we can recycle it. We accept kites from brands like Duotone, Cabrinha, Core, Naish, and more.

If you’re unsure, simply upload a photo or contact us before sending it — we’ll confirm if it’s eligible.

Shipping Process

Once you place your Kite Transformation order, our team will email you the shipping instructions.

You’ll send your sail to our Upwind workshop in Sri Lanka or collection point in France, depending on your location.

We’ll keep you updated throughout the process — from receipt to finished jacket.

Production Time

Each Canopy Jacket is made by hand, and demand is high, so the transformation usually takes 4 to 8 weeks from the moment we receive your kite.

We’ll update you at every step — cleaning, cutting, sewing, and final delivery.

Customization Options

Absolutely!

Once we receive your kite, we’ll schedule a personalization call to choose your:

- Jacket model and fit
- Every single detail, from the colour of each pocket to the large back design.

Each jacket is 100% custom-made from your own sail, making it truly one of a kind.

Leftover Material

We reuse or recycle as much material as possible.

Off-cuts are turned into caps, tote bags, and small accessories, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

This closed-loop approach is at the heart of Upwind’s circular design philosophy.

Where It’s Made

All Upwind jackets are handcrafted between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and France.

Sri Lanka is where most kitesurf sails are originally manufactured — we bring them back to life locally, working with skilled artisans before adding final touches in France.

Durability & Quality

The Canopy Jacket uses 100% recycled material. From the kite fabric, to the inner layer and the zip everything is recycled.

Each jacket is built to last for years of adventure.
